There are circumstances when someone should not make a will at all. But there are no circumstances when a person should not take advice on whether a will is necessary. There were a set of rules passed in the Succession (Scotland) Act 1964 that fit most families, and it may be that they suit your position. A leaflet from the Scottish Executive about that is here. Even if that appears to suit your needs, you may prefer to make a will to allow you more flexibility. If your circumstances are in any way unusual, then you need to make a will.
Initial advice on whether you  need a will is always free. If you wish, for a fixed charge of £20 I will give you a written note of why you need a will, and my advice on how it wil be drawn up. You can then decide whether to go ahead or not. If you decide to go ahead, I will draw up a draft for you to check, then, if it ok, will draw up a will for you to sign. My normal charge is £80 for a completed will, but for that I will normally come to your home to check everything is in order, and act as a witness to your signature. I normally advise clients to register their wills in a public register in Edinburgh (the Books of Council and Session) so that it never gets lost. The charge for that is £10.
